I like poplar. It has nice contrast between the heartwood and the sapwood, it's pretty easy to work with and it ages nicely. Plus I have some laying around so I turned this hanging lamp this weekend.
We're still trying different bulbs with it. The first one was an LED bulb that was way too bright when you looked at the bulb. Now we have a chrome bottom bulb in it. It's nice but seems a bit too dim. But it'll do for now.

Poplar Bowl
I've been turning a few things lately including some French rolling pins that are for sale at Capital Kitchen in Montpelier, VT. But what excites me the most about turning is the ability to take a log of wood, freshly cut down, and turn it into a bowl. Bellboy (bellboynyc.com) had some poplar logs laying around awhile back and I finally found some time to turn one.
I'm happy with the results. I still need some practice at finishing the base of the bowl but I am getting better. And you can't see it in the picture anyhow some in this case I'm off the hook.
Poplar is underrated. Fact.

A Coffee Table
We had a couple of cut-offs of monkey pod from a table that Tony made. Year or so ago lying around the shop so I decided to make a coffee table for Molly's brother as a wedding gift that is overdue by at least a year now. So here it is. All bow tied together with an oil finish.

Drawing Machine App Update
Also, David has been hard at work on the app. It's really getting somewhere. Here is a drawing I did last week on my way to a Yankees game. The black line is the R train and the red line is the D train.
BK Kitchen Floor
The drawing I've been working on for months is finally done. It's of my kitchen foor here in Brooklyn. I had the paper on the floor for one week, recording all of our (and the cats) walking patterns. After the week, I pulled it up and went over the whole thing with ballpoint pen, rendering the marks as dark and the rest as a neutral gray background.
Overall size is about 15' x 9'

Drawing Machine App
I've been working with my friend David Jensenius on a drawing machine app for the iPhone. And by working with him I mean we've talked through the ideas and he's doing all of the programming as that is not a strength of mine (see website that has not been updated since I moved to Brooklyn three years ago).
It's good to be working with him and really exciting to see the progress. Here are a couple of screen shots of the tests so far. The first one is in a car driving in Brooklyn. The second is a round trip train ride to Manhattan.

In Line
I've been given the chance to breath some life into old work. I was contacted about showing some drawing that I did at least 6 years ago now and never showed.
It was nice to unroll them and see them again...it's like seeing old friends.
The drawings seem more like exercises now...something I did between other work. One piece is a series of single lines on strips of paper where I tried to get my pen to move at exactly 1mph. The other three drawings each have a single line that is one mile long.
